Narrative description of Project:
SHINE was selected as the sole training partner to design, prepare course materials adopt to Indian conditions and conduct training to 7 Healthy Urbanization Learning Circles (HULCs, each consisting of Medical Doctor, NGO, Representative from the area, Post graduate Research assistant. They were trained to conduct research to know the cause for Social ill health of Bangalore, find out causes and recommend action to ensure implementation. Bangalore was selected as one of the six centres in the world. SHINE’s work became a model to the world. This was the project of WHO, in collaboeation with BBMP. This was completed by SHINE in four modules:

Module 1 of the HULC training was conducted on 22, 23 and 25 January 2007 and during this period participants were trained on key concepts, action-research methods, principles of leadership, and an introduction to Total Quality Management (TQM) and how this can be applied to addressing complex problems like social determinants in rapidly changing urban settings.

Module 2 was conducted from 31 January – 2 February 2007 and during this period, participants were trained on developing strategies and preparing a project plan to address social determinants of health within small intersectoral teams.

Module 3 of the HULC training was conducted from 7th to 9th August 2007. During this period the participants were trained on action reflection process, review of the experiences of HULC projects, participatory action research, building social capital for health equity, social technology grid, developing an advocacy plan for HULC project.

In Module 4 the HULC members were trained in the following areas on 21st and 22nd November 2007: Recap of previous modules, management of change, presentation skills, team work on the action research projects, preparation of power point presentations, visualizing the course evaluation process (the river game), meditation, team building exercise, team presentation and personal reflections.

Description of actual services provided by your staff within the assignment:
Design, develop training modules, prepare course materials and train Seven HULCs to conduct research for finding out causes of Social ill health of Bangalore, recommend actions for optimising the social health of Bangalore. We were the sole training partners of the joint project of WHO and BBMP. Our training and out comes became models for other Healthy Urbanization Projects of the world. We also monitored the work of HULCs ( Healthy Urbanization Learning Circles to deliver results
